In case you haven't heard, chess boxing combines the #1 thinking sport and the #1 fighting sport to demand the absolute utmost from its competitors. A chess boxing match consists of up to 11 alternating rounds of chess and boxing – six four-minute rounds of chess interspersed with five two-minute rounds of boxing. A win can be earned by knockout, checkmate, expiration of a combatant's 12-minute chess clock, or referee's decision.* As WCBO founder Iepe Rubingh explained to ESPN: "Chess boxing makes you fit for life. It polishes you."
On April 21, 2006, "Anti Terror" Frank Stoldt, a German policeman, defeated Zoran "The Priest" Mijatovic, a Croatian longshoreman, to claim the Euro Championship Heavyweight Crown in Cologne, Germany. The match was even until the fifth round, when The Priest's failure to defend an intervening check cost him a rook. He was unable to secure a knockout in the sixth and resigned to Anti Terror Frank in the face of checkmate in the seventh.
