HOWTO: Design a Book Cover

John Gall, art director for Random House's Vintage and Anchor books, explains his Top Five rules of book cover design. Gall's oeuvre is focused on delivering an eyecatching and memorable impression within severe constraints of space and time—meaning there's plenty of crossover into bumper stickers, if you're stuck for an idea:
Naturally, the rule I like best is #5, "The Rules Are Meant To Be Broken." But that goes with the caveat of some of the best advice I ever got from a long-ago writing teacher, the poet George Bilgere: "You have to know what the rules are before you can break them." Meaning, I guess, if you can't explain why exactly you're violating a priniciple of poetry, design, or life, you prolly oughtta not be doing it. At least that's how I interpreted it, and it's served me pretty well so far.
