Check out the nifty get-out-the-vote mailer the GOP is putting out in swing states Arkanas and West Virginia. Remember A vote for Kerry is a vote for being burned at the stake!

The GOP fessed up to the fliers in Thursday's NY Times (free link expiring fast, also see here). Scans of the full mailer can be viewed in both reasonable browser size: Page 1, Page 2, Page 4; and mongo full resolution size: Page 1, Page 2, Page 4. Page 3 is missing -- it entirely consists of a voter registration form. At least, that what the Arkansas Kerry campaign Arkansas Democratic Party says, and they sent us the pics. For all we know, it might be hanging out at Dan Rather's house....

Democrats will ban the Bible? An absurd thought, except perhaps to anyone who has tried to read one aloud in a public school . . .

says Some Guy :

You can read the Bible in schools as long as I can read the theory of evolution in your churches

05:11:37PM: 09-29-04

says Atheist:

Some Guy: Schools are public property. Churches are private, kinda. Evolution is a theory just like creationism. The two should be viewed as metric vs. royal systems. One is an internationally recognized standard, the other one is an obscure system noone is using anymore. If you want to have a half-way decent biotech job, you'd better study evolution. Otherwise, for most people it makes no difference.

05:50:03PM: 09-29-04

says silvio:

Sorry Atheist. Metric vs. Royal is just a matter of convention. Both are 'right', if not equally convenient. But saying that, for example, the earth was made a few thousand years ago and hasn't changed since is just factually wrong. Your biotechs know that their little bugs are evolving under their eyes. To quote Philip Dick: Reality is what refuses to disappear when you stop believing in it.

great quote silvio!!!!!!!

says Some other guy :

Evolution has a little bit more evidence to back it up than creationism. Creationism is not a theory, it's a belief system. Big difference. I've got an old scroll here that says we where created by space aliens. You gonna teach that in schools too? Or what about our origins according to Hinduism? Buddhism? Mayan Mysticism? They're "theories" are older, maybe we should be teaching those instead? The great thing about this country is that it prevents one group of people from forcing their religion on another group. When you don't have that you get theocratic mono-cultures like most of the Middle East, which turn out to not be so great for the progress of mankind, etc. Creationists point at an old book and say "Proof!", and try to pass that off as somehow comparable to the scientific method. Particle physics is still mostly Theory. Global warming is a Theory. Creationism is not a theory, it's a belief, a Christian belief. Don't teach it to kids in public schools with my tax dollars. If you want creationism, put your kids in a private school. That being said, I've got no problem with Theology being taught in public schools, just don't present it as Theory or Law, cause it isn't.

says Mish:

Candid, you make it seem as if people can't read the bible or quote it under penalty of law. That's simply not true. It's against the law to teach the bible as fact. Just as it's against the law to teach any 'belief system'.

07:04:46AM: 09-30-04

says Candid:

Mish - Are you really going to insist I google up one of the many instances where a school, a court, has banned a reading from the bible under first amendment grounds? Right or wrong, it does happen. Regardless of what far right Christian groups have done in the past to deserve it, today there is a solid perception that the left is extremely hostile to Christians. The Republican flier is simplistic and over the top to be sure, but effective for the target audience. This is trying to get conservative Christians in Alabama to vote - it's not trying to woo potential Kerry supporters! The real question is how badly does this message alienate non-Christians or people who might vote Republican but don't have religious based concerns. Is anyone really going to take it so literally?

09:53:18AM: 09-30-04

says thehomeland:

Mish: Countless times the ACLU has overwhelming outlawed reading the bible in public, with regard to schools. Countless lawsuits have been ACLU-filed that cast down verse-reading in public arenas in outright defiance of the first amendment and WON. It is VERY true, perhaps you just haven't noticed.

10:09:11AM: 09-30-04

says KJ :

The decisions you note are for school sponsored readings. There is nothing that says students can't get together and read the bible in public, it's just that a public school can't endorse them.

says 2by4:

Oh for crying out loud. Come to terms with it. Creationism is a silly piece of fiction. You're an idiot if you truly believe that is how it happened. No excuses, you're a moron, or simply uneducated or incapable of processing that with your defective brain. Religion is a lie, most people suspect it but are crazy afraid to admit it to themselves. Get some guts. Have some balls and talk about the real issue, religion in all shapes or forms is just junk. Eliminate religion and the hate-stance of most current conflicts collapses into the vacuum left by it.

11:42:46AM: 09-30-04

says Rawle:

The reason lots of people can't stand to bear the bible, its because the bible speaks truth. Evolution is mans theory. Creation is Gods! We're just a wicked and peverted society that hate anything to do with truth. The Lord says of those who believein him, "I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and i will be their God, and they shall be my people". 2Corinthians.6:16. Salvation is given freely to all.

says Jeremy :

Interesting mailer. And meanwhile, Dubya's Saudi buddies persecute Christians in their country (http://www.persecution.org/Countries/saudi_arabia.html). I wonder what you believers who have posted here have to say that about that? I know almost all of you are pro-Bush.

02:14:29PM: 09-30-04

says yourgodkilledmypeople:

People aren't afraid to abandon religion, they are just taught that they are special and chosen, and don't want to admit that they might be just as complex as the rest of us, and that even if they go to some building every week and talk to themselves they will still die someday and that will be the end of them. It's a difficult thing to face- that humans are humans and nothing more, that you aren't 'chosen', that you can't do anything about your own death, and that we're all in this together. They've been brainwashed, and it's not their fault.

02:33:42PM: 09-30-04

says Fugly:

Rawle, if that were true nobody would be Christian. Because we are all human I'd hope. And you know, maybe you should tone down the activism, kinda makes you seem like you need to prove something to yourself.

Rawle said "The reason lots of people can't stand to bear the bible, its because the bible speaks truth." Amazingly enough, I can stand the bible, I just don't take it as the literal word of God (probably just as well considering that it is self contradictory)... But if you really want to tell me that I am wrong then please explain the following verse... John 10:34 "Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, ye are gods?" (ASV Translation) And then please explain why you aren't following the prescriptions in Leviticus Chapters 11, 19 ... "Any creature in the water that does not have both fins and scales is detestable to you." Don't eat shellfish, The Campaign to Ban Red Lobster should start soon. "neither shall there come upon thee a garment of two kinds of stuff mingled together" So, no blended fabrics for you then... Pure Cotton only, no Polyester/Cotton blends. "Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you..." No tattoos, you evil person. I could go on... But you get the point I'm sure. So Do you REALLY think that the Bible is the true unadulterated word of God? Z.

says Dark Willow:

Wether or not the Bible can be read aloud by a group in school is within itself irrelevent. The question is, can people of other religions read *their* texts aloud? If not, then the Christians shouldn't be able to either. If they can, then the Christians should be allowed to do likewise. What makes me angry is not so much the degree to which religion is allowed in schools, or any public place, but that Christianity is regarded as more valid than other faiths.
